Nachal Novea Mekor Chochma was founded in 1967 in the name of Rebbe Nachman of Breslev by Rav Gedaliah Aharon Kenig, zt"l, one of the leading Breslever Chassidim of the previous generation and foremost disciple of the legendary Rav Avraham Sternhartz, zt"l. Before Rav Avraham passed away in 1955, he entrusted his student with the task of rebuilding a living Torah community in the Holy City of Tsfat, telling him, "If the Breslever Chassidim will bring Rebbe Nachman's mission to Tsfat, it will benefit the entire world."

This became the life work of Rav Gedaliah, whose vision and self-sacrifice inspired the establishment of a community based on the golden era of sixteenth-century Tsfat.
